If you're searching for gold, particularly of the liquid variety, you'll find a wealth of great pubs in Australia 's Golden Outback. The local pub is where you'll find colourful locals, cold beer and plenty of yarns.

In Kalgoorlie , the biggest and best known pub is the Exchange Hotel. Live music and huge crowds have made this place famous. There are 11 beers on tap, but the Exchange holds the record for the biggest sales of Jim Beam in regional Western Australia.Originally constructed as a shed in the late 1800s, the Exchange was rebuilt as a hotel in 1900.

Also built during the gold rush was the Grand Hotel at the ghost town of Kookynie, north of Kalgoorlie.Visitors are welcomed with open arms and the barman makes a point of introducing them to the locals. Historical photos line the walls and gold mining memorabilia point to a time when beer was said to be cheaper than water.

Stopping into the Hyden Hotel for a refreshment and then go on to visit Wave Rock. Stretching 100 metres long and 15metres high, it resembles a giant wave about to crash.
Visiting the Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame in Kalgoorlie and chat with the locals over lunch at the Palace Hotel.
Hitting the red dirt for a close up view of Mount Augustus – twice the size of Uluru.
The squeaky white sand of Esperance beaches make these the best in the country.
Immersing yourself in colour during the annual wildflower season.
